Within iTunes, it recognized that I was now plugging in the other phone with its correct device name. I tried switching to my work iPhone so I could get an idea whether it was the laptop or the phone causing the problem. When I told it to import, I got an error message: 'Some items cannot be added to your Photo library because they may be unrecognizable file format or the file may not contain valid data.' Each of the file names came up as follows: '(null) (IMG_1215.jpg)' Within the apps, it showed the correct number of pending photos for import, but only showed the outline for the thumbnails, not the photos themselves.
I plugged in my iPhone via USB to my laptop, and found I could not import new photos from the camera roll on the phone to Photos, iPhoto, or Image Capture.
